The Multiple Listing Service (MLS) is a co-operative system under which properties are listed, sold, or purchased. Multiple listing has existed in one form or another since the late 1800’s, when entrepreneurs compiled a list of all homes on the market in London, England. Although the basic idea is still the same, technology has greatly improved the efficiency of the system.
Today, the Real Estate Board of Ottawa-Carleton (REBOC) records listings and sales of properties, then organizes this information and generates a database, which it distributes to real estate offices in our community. The end result of this sophisticated MLS system is produced using computer printouts, e-mail, and a public Internet site.
